When you need a 300 x 400cm rug

A 300 x 400cm rug covers 12 square metres. That is enough for every piece of a large seating area to stand on it: two sofas facing each other, an armchair and a coffee table. In an open plan home it defines the living space like a room within a room.

Check the room first

Leave a border of bare floor around the rug, ideally 30cm to 60cm, so it looks deliberate rather than wall to wall. For a 300 x 400cm rug that means a room of at least about 3.6m by 4.6m. In a smaller room, a 200 x 300cm rug will usually look better. Mark the outline with tape and walk around it before you decide.

Handling a rug this big

A rug of this size is heavy and arrives folded or rolled, so you'll want two people to lay it. Unroll it where it will live, roll it the other way for a while to flatten stubborn creases, and give it a couple of days. A non-slip backing or a rug pad keeps it in place. Even washable rugs are too big for a home machine at this size, so spot clean them or use a carpet cleaner.
