Hall runners: sizes and fit
A runner is a long, narrow rug for a hall, a landing or a galley kitchen. This page has around 30 designs, and most of them also come in larger rug sizes, so the hall can match the living room.
How to measure a hall for a runner
Measure the length and the width of the floor you want to cover. For the width, leave roughly 10cm to 15cm of bare floor on each side, so the runner sits in the middle and doesn't ride up against the skirting. For the length, stop short of the front door and of any door that opens into the hall. Then pick the nearest size below your measurement.
Common runner sizes
- 60 x 240cm and 70 x 240cm: narrow halls and landings.
- 80 x 150cm: a short hall, an entrance or in front of a kitchen sink.
- 60 x 300cm and 80 x 300cm: longer halls.
- 90 x 300cm and longer: wide halls, in a few woven designs.
Built for traffic
The hall takes more wear and more dirt than any other room. A low pile is easy to vacuum, and the front door can usually swing over it. Washable runners can go in a home machine, which suits homes with children or a dog. Jute and other natural weaves add texture, and the darker vintage patterns hide everyday marks.
Non-slip backing
Most of the runners here have a non-slip or anti-slip backing, listed in the details. On a tiled or polished wooden floor it stops the runner creeping, which is what makes a loose runner a trip hazard.
Colour and pattern
Darker and patterned runners show less dirt from shoes than pale plain ones. A pale runner brightens a dark hall, so it can be worth a washable one.
Kitchens and stairs
A washable runner is a good fit in front of a sink or cooker, where spills happen. For the stairs, there are carpet stair tread sets in packs of several steps.

Questions about hall runners
What size runner do I need for my hall?
Measure the floor and leave about 10cm to 15cm of bare floor on each side. Most halls suit a runner 60cm to 80cm wide, in lengths from 150cm to 300cm.
Are the hall runners washable?
Several are machine washable, and the listing title says so. The care notes give the cycle and temperature.
Will a runner slip on a wooden or tiled floor?
Most runners here have a non-slip or anti-slip backing, listed in the product details, which stops them creeping on hard floors.
Can I use a hall runner in the kitchen?
Yes. A washable, low pile runner is the practical choice in front of a sink or cooker.
Is delivery free on hall runners?
Yes. Delivery is free to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and most orders arrive in 3 to 7 days.
Can I return a hall runner?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, as long as it is unused and in its original packaging. Email us first and we will send the return address. Damaged or faulty items are replaced or refunded at no cost to you.
