Double beds: 4ft6, 135 x 190cm

A double bed takes a 135 x 190cm mattress, also called 4ft6. It's the most common bed size for couples and for the main bedroom in most homes. This page has around 70 double bed frames. Double frames start at €99, and most cost between €119 and €269.

Is a double enough for two

A double gives each person 67.5cm of width, which is less than a single bed each. Plenty of couples are happy with that. If one of you sprawls, or you're tall, a king adds 15cm of width and 10cm of length. Room size decides the rest: with 60cm of floor on each side, a double needs a room about 2.6 metres wide, a little more once the frame and headboard are counted.

Styles

Metal frames are the largest group, from plain platform beds to frames with a headboard and footboard. There are also upholstered frames with velvet or fabric headboards, wooden frames, and frames with drawers, a storage headboard or LED lights. A few floating frames sit on a recessed base, so the bed looks as if it hovers.

High double bed frames and storage

A high frame makes the bed easier to get in and out of and leaves room underneath. Where the listing gives the clearance, most metal platform frames leave 27cm to 36cm under the bed. Some come in more than one height, listed in the size option.

European doubles

A few frames are European doubles, 140 x 190cm or 140 x 200cm. They need a matching mattress, so check the size option before you order. A standard 135cm mattress in a 140cm frame leaves a gap at the side.

Assembly

Frames arrive flat packed, and most include the tools and instructions. Two people make it much easier. Check the parts first, because flat-pack items can only come back unassembled.
