Bed Frames & Headboards

Choosing a bed frame

A bed frame is sold by the mattress it takes, so start with the mattress size. This page has around 90 frames and headboards, and most come in several sizes. Prices start at €99, and most cost between €99 and €229 in their smallest size.

Bed sizes

• Single beds, 3ft: take a 90 x 190cm mattress.
• Small double beds, 4ft: 120 x 190cm.
• Double beds, 4ft6: 135 x 190cm.
• King beds, 5ft: 150 x 200cm.
• Super king beds, 6ft: 180 x 200cm.

The frame itself is a little longer and wider than the mattress, more so with a headboard and footboard. Check the overall size on the listing against your room. A useful rule is to leave about 60cm of floor on each side of the bed, so you can get in and out and open a bedside drawer.

Metal, wooden or upholstered

Metal platform frames make up about half of this range. They have steel slats, so the mattress sits straight on the frame with no box spring needed. Many have a headboard and footboard, in plain modern or Victorian styles. Upholstered frames have a padded headboard in velvet or fabric for a softer look. Wooden frames, including bamboo, suit a warmer, more traditional room.

Under-bed storage

Many metal platform frames leave a clear gap under the bed. Where the listing gives it, it's usually between 27cm and 36cm, enough for flat storage boxes and suitcases. Some frames add drawers or a storage headboard with shelves, and a few have a headboard with USB charging.

Slats, support and noise

Steel slats are strong and don't sag. Wooden slats give a little more spring. If you have a memory foam mattress, check the gap between the slats on the listing, as foam needs close support. Many frames list padded joints or noise-free fittings to stop creaks.

Assembly

Frames arrive flat packed, and most include the tools and instructions. A double or larger is much easier with two people. If you think you might return it, check the parts before you build it, because flat-pack items need to come back unassembled.
