Choosing an electric fire

An electric fire gives you the look of a real fire with no chimney, no flue and no ash. Most plug into a wall socket. The main choice is where it will sit.

Electric stoves

A freestanding stove sits on a hearth or the floor and looks like a wood burner. Many have a log effect that glows and flickers. They are easy to move, so they suit a rented home.

Inset fires

An inset fire slots into an existing fireplace opening. Measure the opening, width, height and depth, and compare it with the measurements on the listing before you order.

Wall mounted and media wall fires

These hang on the wall like a picture or fit into a recess in a media wall. They take no floor space and work well under a TV. A recessed fireplace insert needs a frame or a cavity built to its size.

Heat and flame

Fires with a heater usually give around 1.8 to 2kW, enough to warm a living room on a cold evening. On many models the flame effect runs with the heat off, so you can enjoy the look all year. Several have a remote control, a timer and a choice of flame colours.

Before you order

Check whether the fire plugs in or needs to be wired in by an electrician, and leave the clearance around it that the listing gives. Plug a heater straight into a wall socket rather than an extension lead.
