TV stands and units: what to check
This page has around 140 TV stands and units. They fall into two groups: units and cabinets that the TV stands on, and TV stands with a built-in mount, many on wheels, that hold the screen up off the floor.
Which size for your TV
These are approximate widths for a TV with a slim frame, and the unit sizes that look right under them.
- 32 inch: about 72cm wide. A unit of 80cm or more.
- 43 inch: about 96cm wide. A unit of 110cm or more.
- 50 inch: about 112cm wide. A unit of 120cm or more.
- 55 inch: about 123cm wide. A unit of 140cm or more.
- 65 inch: about 145cm wide. A unit of 160cm or more.
- 75 inch: about 167cm wide. A unit of 180cm or more.
TV stands on wheels and floor stands
A TV stand with a mount holds the screen on a bracket fixed to a column, so the TV can sit higher than on a unit and there's no wall to drill. Many are on wheels, which suits a room where you watch from different places, a bedroom, a classroom or an office. Most list a range of screen sizes, commonly 32 to 65 inch or 32 to 75 inch, and a maximum TV weight, often around 40kg to 50kg. Many are height adjustable, and some let the screen tilt or swivel.
VESA: will my TV fit the mount
The VESA pattern is the spacing of the four screw holes on the back of your TV, in millimetres, such as 200 x 200 or 400 x 400. Your TV's manual or the label on the back gives it. Each stand with a mount lists the patterns it fits, most often from 100 x 100 up to 600 x 400. Check both the VESA pattern and the weight of your TV before ordering.
TV units and cabinets
Cabinets range from low wooden units in oak and walnut finishes to glass stands, and corner units that sit across a corner to save floor space. Most have a hole or channel at the back to feed cables through. A few add LED lights or a power outlet built into the unit. Check the depth as well as the width: a deeper top leaves room for a soundbar in front of the TV's feet.
Assembly
TV units and stands arrive flat packed, and many include the tools. On a tall unit or a mobile stand, use the anti-tip strap or wall anchor if one is supplied, especially with children or pets in the house.

The simplest rule is to pick a TV unit wider than the TV itself. A 55 inch TV is about 123cm wide, so a unit of 140cm or more looks right under it. A 65 inch TV is about 145cm wide and suits 160cm or more. Check where your TV's feet sit as well. Many TVs have feet near the outer edges, so the top has to be wide enough for them, not just for the screen.
