Choosing a kitchen bin

Most homes now sort rubbish into general waste, recycling and food waste, and a kitchen bin that matches makes that easy. Start with how many bags you fill in a week and how much floor space you can give it.

Single or recycling bins

A single bin of 30 to 50 litres suits most kitchens. A double recycling bin splits the space into two compartments, for example two 15, 20 or 30 litre sections, so general waste and recycling each get their own bag. A triple bin adds a third section for food waste or glass.

How it opens

• Pedal bins open with your foot, so your hands stay free. A soft close lid shuts slowly and quietly.
• Sensor bins open when you wave a hand over the lid and close on their own. They need batteries or charging.
• Touch bins open with a light press on the lid or a bar.

Shape and size

Rectangular bins sit flush against a wall or a unit, which saves space compared with a round bin of the same capacity. Slim bins fit the gap beside a fridge. Measure the space, then check the height with the lid open, especially under a worktop overhang.

Easy to keep clean

Stainless steel wipes clean. Removable inner buckets lift out for washing, and some bins have a pocket for spare liners.
