Why choose a hammock with a stand

A freestanding hammock sets up anywhere with flat ground: a lawn, a patio, a balcony or a conservatory. The steel frame holds the hammock at the right tension, and most stands come apart or fold for storage over winter.

Size and weight

Double hammocks on a 9ft stand take two adults, and listings give weight limits of up to around 250kg. The full setup is long, often close to 3m end to end, so measure the space before you order. Hammock chairs and egg chairs need far less room, roughly 1m to 1.8m across.

Fabric

Cotton hammocks are soft and breathable. Polyester and polycotton dry faster after rain. Bring the fabric in during long wet spells and store it dry over winter, and it will last more seasons.

Egg chairs

A hanging egg chair is a rattan or wicker seat on a curved stand, with a thick cushion. Some fold down for storage. They work outside in summer and indoors in a bedroom or sunroom the rest of the year.

Setting up

Put the stand on level ground and check that the hooks, chains or ropes are secure before each use. Several stands go together without tools. On soft grass, a board under each foot stops the frame sinking.

Hammock or hammock chair

A full hammock is for lying down and suits a long afternoon in the garden. A hammock chair or egg chair is for sitting up to read, and fits a small patio or a corner of a room. If more than one person will use it, a double hammock or a wide egg chair gives everyone more space.
