How a pop up gazebo works

The frame is a folding steel structure with the roof already attached. Pull it open, the legs click into place, and the height adjusts in a few steps. Packing away is the same in reverse, and most fold into a carry bag that fits in a car boot.

Size

A 2 x 2m gazebo shades a small table and a few chairs. A 3 x 3m gazebo covers a table for six or a market stall. A 3 x 2m model suits narrow gardens. Check the roof size as well as the leg footprint, because on some designs the roof is smaller than the base.

Waterproof or water resistant

Fabric differs from model to model. Gazebos listed as fully waterproof have coated fabric and are made to keep rain out, not just a light shower. Water resistant fabric copes with light rain but can drip in a downpour. If you will use it in changeable weather, pick one listed as fully waterproof, and look for a hydrostatic head figure such as 1000mm or more. Many roofs also carry a UV rating for sun protection.

Side walls

Side panels block wind, low sun and rain blowing in sideways. Some gazebos include one, two or four walls, and a few walls have windows or zipped doors. Screen tent designs use mesh sides to keep insects out.

Wind

A gazebo catches the wind like a sail. Peg every leg into the ground, add weight bags or sandbags on hard surfaces, and take it down if strong wind is forecast. Never leave it standing overnight in a storm. Dry the fabric fully before packing it away so it doesn't go mouldy in the bag.
