Clothes rails and clothes racks: what to check
A clothes rail gives you hanging space without the cost or bulk of a fitted wardrobe. It suits a box room, a rented room or an attic room with a sloped ceiling, and it comes with you when you move. This page has around 90 rails, racks and freestanding wardrobes. Prices start at €99, and most cost between €109 and €249.
Width
Measure the wall or alcove first, then leave a few centimetres at each end. A single rail of 110cm to 120cm holds the everyday clothes of one person on slim hangers. Double rails and extendable rails run from about 150cm to past 2 metres. Extendable and telescopic rails slide out to the width you need, which helps in an alcove or along a sloping attic wall.
Height and depth
Most rails here stand between about 165cm and 200cm tall. If you hang long coats or dresses, look for a bar at 165cm or higher so the hems stay off the floor. Depth is usually 40cm to 50cm, roughly the width of a coat on a hanger. Allow a little more for a rail with a shoe shelf at the bottom.
Weight rating
Coats, jeans and jumpers weigh more than you'd think, and a light rail bows in the middle once it's full. Many listings give the load the rail is rated for. Some lighter rails take only 7kg to 20kg on the hanging bar, so check the rating before you fill one. The heavy duty rails, about half of this page, are rated from roughly 100kg to well over 300kg. For a family's winter coats, or a rail that holds stock for a market stall, choose one of those.
Wheels, shelves and covers
Rails on castors are easy to pull out when you clean behind them. Most of the wheeled rails have castors that lock, which keeps them still on wooden and laminate floors. Two-tier rails hang shirts above trousers in the same floor space. Rails with shelves or baskets take shoes, bags and folded jumpers, and a few have fabric drawers. If dust is a worry, choose a rail with a zip cover, or a fabric wardrobe that closes all the way.
Freestanding wardrobes
The range also has open wardrobes with a steel frame and shelves, fabric wardrobes and plastic cube wardrobes. They are light, most need no wall fixings, and they come apart again for a move. A couple of wall mounted rails suit a hallway or utility room.
Assembly
Rails and wardrobes arrive flat packed, and several click together without tools. Build it near where it will stand, as a loaded rail is awkward to move through a doorway.
Delivery and returns
Delivery is free to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and most orders arrive in 3 to 7 days. If you think you might return a rail, check it before you assemble it. You can return an unused item in its original packaging within 30 days of delivery, and our support team answers email 7 days a week. The details are on our delivery and returns page.
More help
Our guide to clothes rails for small bedrooms covers sizes, weight limits and covers in more detail. If you only want rails, this page shows clothes rails on their own. For the rest of the room, see shoe storage, coat racks and chests of drawers.
Questions about wardrobes & clothes rails
How much weight can a clothes rail hold?
It depends on the rail, and many listings give its load rating. Some lighter rails take only 7kg to 20kg on the hanging bar. The heavy duty rails are rated from roughly 100kg to well over 300kg.
What width of clothes rail do I need?
A single rail of 110cm to 120cm suits the everyday clothes of one person. Double and extendable rails run from about 150cm to over 2 metres. Measure the wall and leave a little space at each end.
Do the clothes rails have wheels?
Many do, and most of those have castors that lock so the rail stays put on wooden or laminate floors. The listing title and photos show which rails have wheels.
Can I get a clothes rail with a cover?
Yes. A few rails come with a zip-up cover, and the fabric wardrobes close fully, which keeps dust off clothes you don't wear often.
Is delivery free on clothes rails?
Yes. Delivery is free to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and most orders arrive in 3 to 7 days.
Can I return a clothes rail?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery, as long as it is unused and in its original packaging. Email us first and we will send the return address. Please don't assemble it if you plan to send it back. Damaged or faulty items are replaced or refunded at no cost to you.
