Wardrobes without the fitted price

A fitted wardrobe needs a wall, a fitter and a big budget. The wardrobes here go up in an evening and come with you when you move. They fall into three groups, and each solves a slightly different problem.

Fabric wardrobes

A light frame with a fabric cover that zips or rolls up at the front. The cover keeps dust off your clothes, and inside you get a hanging rail plus a stack of shelves. They weigh very little, so they suit upstairs rooms and anyone who moves often.

Plug-in cube wardrobes

Plastic or wire panels that clip together into cubes, with doors and a hanging section. You choose the layout as you build it, and you can rearrange it later. The larger versions can double as shoe storage.

Open wardrobes

A metal frame with rails and shelves and no doors at all. Everything is on show, so you can see what you own at a glance. They work well in a walk-in space, an alcove or a spare room.

Measure first

• Height. Long coats and dresses need a hanging drop of about 120cm or more under the rail.
• Width. Allow roughly 2cm of rail for each shirt on a hanger.
• Weight. Each listing gives a load limit. Heavy winter coats add up quickly.
