Choosing a sofa bed

A sofa bed earns its place in a small home. It is a seat for most of the week and a bed for the nights you have a guest. The range here covers four kinds, and the right one depends on how often the bed gets slept in and how much floor space you have.

Folding foam sofa beds

Most of the sofa beds here are blocks of foam inside a cover. Unfold them flat and you have a mattress on the floor. Fold them back and they become a low sofa or chair. There are no bars or springs to pinch fingers or wear out, and one person can move them. Check the open length in the measurements before you order. Around 190cm suits most adults.

Chair beds and settees

A chair bed is a single seat that opens into a single bed. It suits a box room, or a home office that doubles as a guest room. Some settees fold their back down flat to make the bed instead.

Daybeds

A daybed is a single bed frame with a back and sides, so it sits against the wall like a sofa. Some add storage underneath. Check the listing to see whether a mattress is included. If you need one, a single mattress (3ft, 90 x 190cm) is the usual fit.

Kids sofa beds

Smaller foam sofa beds fold out into a floor mattress for sleepovers and fold back into a little couch for the playroom. Several have covers that unzip, and the care notes on each listing say how to wash them.

When it arrives

Foam sofa beds often arrive compressed to keep the box small. Unpack yours in the room where it will live and give the foam 24 to 72 hours to recover its full shape.

For a guest bed that packs away flatter, see our folding mattresses and floor mattresses. Delivery is free to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and most orders arrive in 3 to 7 days. You can return an item within 30 days.
