What makes a clothes rail heavy duty
A light rail starts to bow in the middle once it carries a few coats. A heavy duty rail uses thicker steel tube, often 25mm across or more, a wider base and extra bracing. The rails here list total load limits from about 136kg up to around 400kg. That total is usually split between the hanging bar and any shelves, so read the figure for the rail itself if you plan to hang heavy coats.
Single, double and wide rails
A single rail suits one person's clothes in a spare room. Double rails add a second bar, either above or beside the first, which gives far more hanging space on the same floor area. Wide rails of around 180cm to 190cm, often called 6ft rails, take a lot of clothes but need a clear stretch of wall. Several models extend, so you can set the width or height to fit an alcove or a sloped ceiling.
With shelves or drawers
Many heavy duty rails are really open wardrobes, with wire or wooden shelves for shoes, bags and folded jumpers. Some have fabric drawers. Corner units and wall-mounted systems make use of awkward spaces, and they are worth a look if floor space is tight.
On wheels or fixed feet
Rails with castors are easy to move for cleaning or to roll out of the way. Choose locking wheels if the rail will be fully loaded. Rails on fixed feet stay put on carpet and are the simpler choice for a permanent spot. All the mobile models are together in clothes rails on wheels.
Dust
An open rail gathers dust on shoulders and on anything stored on top. If that matters, look for a rail sold with a cover in our full range of clothes rails, or use garment bags for the clothes you wear least.
Our guide to clothes rails for small bedrooms covers sizes and weight limits in more detail. Delivery is free to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and most orders arrive in 3 to 7 days.
