What to look for in a festival trolley

A festival trolley is a folding fabric wagon on a steel frame, pulled by a long handle. It saves several trips from the car to the campsite and folds flat enough to go back in the boot. It is just as useful for the beach, the allotment, sports days and the weekly shop.

Capacity

Capacity is given in litres. A 120 to 200 litre trolley is a compact, everyday size. Larger 250 to 400 litre trolleys suit a family, and many have an extended rear section with a drop-down tailgate for long items such as fishing rods, folding chairs or a paddle board. Listed weight limits run up to about 200kg.

Wheels and terrain

Wheels make the biggest difference. Wide, chunky wheels roll over grass, gravel and sand far better than narrow ones, and PU or rubber wheels wear better than hard plastic. Look for brakes if you will stop on a slope. Beach trolleys have extra-wide wheels made for soft sand.

Folding size

Check the folded size against your boot. Compact models fold down to roughly 25 x 24 x 60cm, while large 400 litre trolleys stay bigger even when folded.

Extras

Useful extras include a canopy for shade, a mesh cover to stop things falling out, cup holders and side pockets. An adjustable handle helps if people of different heights will pull it.

Looking after it

Brush off sand and let the fabric dry fully before folding it away for the winter. A trolley stored damp can mark or go musty.
