A clothes rail gives you hanging space without the cost or bulk of a wardrobe. It's handy in a box room, a rented room or a spare room that fills up at Christmas. Two numbers matter. The first is the width of the bar, the second is the weight it's rated for. Single rails start around 110cm wide, while double and extendable rails go past 180cm. Load ratings vary a lot, from about 60kg on lighter rails to several hundred kilos on the heavy duty ones.

Rails with wheels are easy to pull out when you're cleaning or rearranging. Lockable castors keep them in place on wooden and laminate floors. Two-tier rails hang shirts above trousers in the same floor space, and models with shelves or baskets take shoes and folded jumpers too.
