A compact living room comes with one big advantage: it's cosy by default. The trick is arranging it so it feels open rather than cramped. Here's how.
Float the sofa off the wall — slightly
Pushing everything flat against the walls can actually make a room feel smaller. Even a few centimetres of breathing space adds depth.
Choose the right scale
A neat two- or three-seater with slim arms leaves far more usable floor space than a bulky corner unit. Legs that lift the sofa off the floor make the room feel airier too.
Use multi-tasking furniture
A coffee table or footstool with storage hides clutter; a nest of side tables tucks away when you don't need them. (Not sure which table to pick? Read The Difference Between Coffee Tables and Side Tables.)
Draw the eye up
Tall, narrow shelving and wall-mounted lighting keep the floor clear and make ceilings feel higher.
Let light bounce
Keep the palette light, position seating near the window, and use a floor lamp to brighten darker corners in the evening.
