Coffee tables and side tables both earn their place in a well-furnished living room, but they do different jobs. Here's how to tell them apart and choose the right ones for your space.
Purpose
A coffee table sits at the centre of your seating, a low surface for drinks, snacks, books and a bit of styling. A side table (or lamp table) sits beside a sofa or chair, perfect for a lamp, a cup of tea or the TV remote.
Size and height
Coffee tables are typically larger and lower, sitting around the height of your sofa seat. Side tables are smaller and often a little taller, so they're within easy reach when you're sitting down.
How many do you need?
Most living rooms benefit from one coffee table plus one or two side tables. If space is tight, a nest of tables gives you flexibility without permanent clutter.
Choosing a style
Match materials and finishes loosely rather than perfectly — a marble-top coffee table with wooden side tables looks considered, not matchy. Storage versions help keep a small room tidy.
