Choosing a Mattress: Memory Foam vs Pocket Sprung

Choosing a Mattress: Memory Foam vs Pocket Sprung

A good mattress is one of the best investments you can make in your day-to-day wellbeing — you spend a third of your life on it, after all. Two types dominate: memory foam and pocket sprung. Here's how they differ.

Memory foam

Memory foam moulds to your body, cradling pressure points like hips and shoulders. It's a great choice if you:

  • Like a 'hugged', contouring feel.
  • Share a bed — it absorbs movement, so you're less likely to disturb each other.
  • Have joint or pressure-point discomfort.

Some sleepers find foam retains heat, so look for gel-infused or breathable versions if you sleep warm.

Pocket sprung

Pocket sprung mattresses use individual springs that move independently, giving responsive, even support with better airflow. They suit you if you:

  • Prefer a more traditional, supportive 'bounce'.
  • Sleep hot and want better breathability.
  • Want targeted support across the whole body.

Can't decide?

Hybrid mattresses combine pocket springs with a foam comfort layer — the best of both. Whichever you choose, match it to your bed size first (see our guide to bed & mattress sizes).
