How to choose a mattress

Three things decide it: the size of your bed frame, the type of mattress and how firm you like it. This page has around 150 mattresses. Most singles cost between €139 and €249, most doubles between €179 and €329 and most kings between €199 and €349.

Mattress sizes

• Small single, 2ft6: 75 x 190cm
• Single, 3ft: 90 x 190cm
• Small double, 4ft: 120 x 190cm
• Double, 4ft6: 135 x 190cm
• King, 5ft: 150 x 200cm
• Super king, 6ft: 180 x 200cm

Measure the inside of your bed frame rather than going by the label on the old mattress. A few listings use European sizes, such as 90 x 200cm or 140 x 200cm, and the size option says so where they do.

Memory foam, pocket sprung or hybrid

Memory foam moulds to your shape and soaks up movement, so you feel less of a partner turning over. It can sleep warm, and many of the foam mattresses here have a gel or open-cell layer to help with that.

Pocket sprung mattresses have springs in individual fabric pockets that move on their own. They feel bouncier and more breathable than all-foam.

Hybrid mattresses put a foam comfort layer on top of pocket springs. You get the support and airflow of the springs with some of the feel of foam. Hybrids make up about a third of this range.

Folding mattresses fold into three for storage. They suit guest rooms, sleepovers and camper vans.

Firmness and depth

Medium firm is the most common rating here. Side sleepers often prefer a little softer at the shoulder and hip, and front sleepers a little firmer. Depth runs from 10cm to 15cm for folding mattresses up to 30cm and more for the thickest hybrids, and 25cm is the most common.

Rolled mattresses

Most mattresses here arrive vacuum packed and rolled in a box, which makes them easy to carry up the stairs. Once it's unpacked, give the mattress 24 to 72 hours to reach its full size and shape before you judge the feel. A new foam smell for the first day or two is normal, and an open window helps.

Check the size before you open it. A rolled mattress can't go back into its packaging once it has expanded, and returns need to be unused and in the original packaging. Damaged or faulty mattresses are always replaced or refunded.
